The club was founded in 1973 by the Actonville community and facilities were provided by the Benoni City Council. It was a non-racial club from the outset although administration was mostly in the hands of its Indian membership. Miners in the area as well as farmers from the Eastern Cape and teachers in the Benoni area played a pioneering role. When Vincent Barnes, current assistant coach to the national team, joined Actonville Spurs in 1986 as captain/coach, the club had no junior teams. He was instrumental in organizing a six-a-side tournament to attract young soccer players and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. That was to be the start of a flourishing youth structure in the cricket section. Actonville Spurs was a founder member of the post-unity Easterns Cricket Union.
